Every day, RCS works to care for and protect the Rivanna River, the precious natural resource that runs through the heart of our community.

Rivanna Conservation Society is dedicated to safeguarding the ecological, scenic, recreational and historic resources of the Rivanna River and its watershed.

Major Accomplishments of 2014

In April of this year, RCS launched the Rivanna River Makeover — our largest and most successful community river cleanup in our 24-year history. The Makeover
included buffer plantings, restoration projects, sojourns and river paddles, student education programs, school greening initiatives, river cleanups, and public lecture forums.

Across 2014 our new Rivanna River Guardians Corps took to the water. These dedicated volunteers patrol the Rivanna, taking water quality samples of chemical and bacterial levels, removing trash and debris, and identifying areas of concern.
They are assisted by the RCS-staffed Rivanna River Stewards, who patrol the river several times a week as RCS’s on-the-water presence.

Over a span of several months this year, the bacteria monitoring program established by Stream Watch and Rivanna Conservation Society detected elevated
bacteria levels in Lodge Creek in Charlottesville. Levels so high, they were six times greater than the state standard for clean water. Stream Watch immediately notified the City of Charlottesville and RCS was gearing up to send staff to investigate when the City identified the source of the problem and took steps to resolve it. Thanks to
the watchfulness of RCS and its partners, a hazardous water quality issue was caught and corrected before it got out of control.

These programs and others will continue to grow in the year ahead. As we begin the RCS 25th Anniversary Celebration, we will be adding new projects including our new Invasive Plants Removal Project, the Rivanna History and Kiosk Improvement Project, and among the most exciting, design and construction of the Scheier Nature Area’s Education Center.

To survive and thrive, RCS relies on the support of members from the Rivanna Watershed community, like you. Thank you so much for your support of RCS, as a member, donor, owner of an RCS rain barrel, or as a participant in one of our many events. We hope you will continue your support of RCS through a renewed membership and join us as we care for and protect our community's most precious natural resource. If you are not currently a member, please join to help RCS continue to thrive.
