Tapestry Health meets urgent community health needs in Western MA, including HIV/AIDS testing, education, prevention & supportive services.

This Giving Tuesday is also World AIDS Day. While great strides have been made since the earliest days of the AIDS crisis, there is still a lot of work to be done here in Western MA. Springfield has the 2nd highest rate of new infections in Massachusetts, disproportionately affecting men and women of color. And injection drug use, which has reached epidemic proportions across all socio-economic classes, now accounts for 30% of new infections in our region.

By donating to Tapestry, you can do your part to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in our community. You’ll also help ensure that your neighbors living with HIV/AIDS get the dignified care and treatment they deserve.

Intervention for Prevention

With injection drug use accounting for so many HIV/AIDS cases in the region, Tapestry is here to protect both users and the community from HIV/AIDS transmission during the ongoing opioid crisis. At our Needle Exchanges in Holyoke and Northampton, we teach the importance of safe injection practices and provide sterile needles. This discourages needle reuse and curbs HIV transmission. We do testing and counseling on-site and connect clients to medical care when needed. When a client is ready to seek help for addiction, we are here to assist them.

“Know Your Status”

Unprotected sex is still one of the most common ways of transmitting HIV/AIDS. Education and testing is the best way to prevent new infections and reduce transmission. Tapestry provides testing at nine locations, from Pittsfield to Greenfield to Springfield. Our HIV tests give fast initial results, and our trained, compassionate counselors offer safe sex education and help clients with next steps. We encourage effective communication between HIV+ clients and their partners, educating them about treatment plans to reduce the likelihood of transmission and helping them access medication, like PrEP, to prevent sharing the disease.

Supportive Services

Tapestry will work with any HIV+ individual requesting help, as well as infected or affected family members. We make sure that clients promptly receive health and social services and focus on helping clients stay healthy through medication, timely medical care, and low-risk behaviors. We advocate for fair treatment of our clients, helping them access mental healthcare, substance abuse treatment, housing, benefits, and safety from violence. Our free food pantries for HIV+ individuals feed up to 80 people each month in Springfield and Greenfield.
