Songwriting Works™ unites people of all ages and backgrounds in its mission to restore joy, hope, health and community through song.

Songwriting Works™ provides music-making experiences that turn loneliness into connection, depression into happiness, and illness into health.

Strangers become musical collaborators, neighbors become friends. Those who never dared sing before - or who have been left out or silenced because of their circumstances - find their voices and are celebrated. Those who have been playing music for years find gratifying ways to bring their skills into service.

Each program is led by a professional songwriter trained in Songwriting Works' 8 Principles of Creative Engagement and its research-based, award-winning approach to community building through music.

Through workshops, performances, recording and video projects and community events
older folks, younger folks, families and friends co-write and share their compelling stories turning them into memorable songs. Each song carries the wit, humor, history, melodies, rhythms and creative intelligence of the people who wrote it.

The participants-turned-composers include people who are living with Alzheimer's and dementia, Parkinson's, chronic illness, depression, stress, isolation, grief and other life challenges.

As we lift our collective voices in original song: joy, hope and wellness are restored. Relationships are strengthened. Stigmas dissolve. Attitudes are transformed. Participants and audiences alike leave each Songwriting Works' workshop, circle or event with renewed courage, lightness of heart and a wider sense of what is possible.

In 2016 Songwriting Works will release "Life's a Song", a ground-breaking album of original songs composed by 200 neighbors spanning five generations. The songs were written in collaboration with professional songwriters at care and community locations throughout Washington State's rural north Olympic Peninsula.

Your donation today will go to support SW's local and national programming as well as Life's a Song on tour: SW's SongTeam of award-winning musicians will bring concerts, multi-media events, artist-in-residence projects and facilitator trainings to communities across the West and beyond.
