Original devised work, new plays and reinterpretations of classic and modern plays; physical actor training in an ensemble setting. . . . .
SERIOUS PLAY! THEATRE ENSEMBLE works toward reshaping society's conversation on prominent social issues through the art of ensemble theatre. We strive to inspire curiosity, to challenge, tantalize and engage audiences, and to pose the uncomfortable questions. We are committed to attracting audiences back to the power of the live moment.
In March-April of 2016, we’ll be bringing our “Endgame Project” to the Academy of Music in Northampton and to Gateway City Arts in Holyoke. Based on our two-year study of fusing physical theatre with puppetry, we have pursued a particular path into this iconic script, and we’re ready to share our work with an audience.
Recent productions include “Blind Dreamers,” a work of devised physical theatre inspired by the creative process of Pina Bausch, which toured to the Irondale Center in August 2013 after several local performances. Ntozake Shange's “For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf” was performed in Northampton and Springfield and toured to regional schools.
Other productions include a commissioned new play, “Milosevic at the Hague,” which after a Northampton premiere, toured to Serbia; “What's Left is Not Right ‑ Marat-Sade,” with original music by Elizabeth Swados, which toured to NYC and London; Lenelle Moise’s “Matermorphosis,” performed at the Ko Festival; “Becoming Antigone,” developed in collaboration with Universes; “Hamlet ‑ Asalto a la Inocencia,” with new text by Migdalia Cruz, which toured to the Women Playwrights’ Festival in Athens; and Alice Tuan’s “Coastline,” which toured to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Serious Play! is the main project of Cultural Images Group, which received its non-profit status in 1987.
