HIHFL promotes literacy in the U.S. and abroad by bringing books to communities who have none. Improving lives one library at a time.

It all started with one simple question from a 12 year old boy named Emmanuel. "Please Madam Deb, if there is any way you could send me just one book to help me reach my dream of becoming a doctor, I would be forever grateful." This question came after I spent two weeks as a volunteer teacher in a small village in rural Ghana. At first it seemed like such a simple request. Send a boy a book. Then I thought about the faces of all the other students I had taught. The dreams that each and every child in that village held for their futures as well. For the first time in my life I experienced the reality of a "reading famine". These students were so eager to learn, yet they had no access to books. To a child living in poverty, a book is a gift of hope for a better future.

HIHFL was born out of a desire to change lives by bringing books to villages where there are none. Our first library, The Senchi Ferry Community Library (Emmanuel's village), opened in 2012. It serves 5 communities and 12 schools. Nearly 2,000 children visit the library each week. The Hand In Hand For Literacy Library in Winneba, Ghana opened in 2013. This library is a lending library for the community with over 80 families already enrolled. During the day it functions as a school library for over 800 students who have been rescued from child slavery. The Jukwa Community Library, in the Cape Coast region of Ghana, opens in December 2015.

Please join us in giving hundreds of other children a future they could have never dreamed of. Your financial contribution will enable us to embark on our first U.S. based library. Thank you for considering giving this life changing gift.

Warmly, Deb McNally ~ Founder/Director
