Eye Care for Kids

People will like you if you give back to your community!!!

The National Commission on Vision and Health recently reported that approximately one in four school-aged children experience vision problems and that 40% of children who fail initial vision screenings do not receive follow up care. When children can’t see, learning is difficult. Many visually impaired children avoid reading ,experience headaches and fatigue and exhibit a short attention span. Eye Care for Kids, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit recognizes the link between vision and learning and was formed to provide thousands of low-income, uninsured students with free eye exams and glasses. Its mission is to empower children to reach their full educational and social potential through vision. Since 1998 Eye Care for Kids has provided glasses for more than 24,000 children. For its accomplishments Eye Care for Kids has been honored with the American Public Health Association's "Outstanding Vision Project" Award. The Foundation provides services for students enrolled in PreK-12th grade in 56 school districts throughout the greater Houston area. Eye Care for Kids receives referrals from school nurses, social workers and Eye Care for Kids vision screeners. Qualified applicants are referred to one of Eye Care for Kids’ 100+ doctors in their neighborhood Eye Care for Kids also provides eye care directly on school campuses through the Mobile Eye Institute. School bus trips take children to the University Eye Institute where Eye Care for Kids pays for glasses. For families with transportation challenges, Eye Care for Kids provides Metro Money upon request. Eye Care for Kids provider doctors donate eye exams and are reimbursed the discounted rate of $50 for new frames with polycarbonate corrective lenses. An additional $20 is paid for students who require high-powered prescriptions. During the 2011-12 school year, Eye Care for Kids has set a goal to provide exams and glasses for 3,000 children.
