Help me continue my father's fight against lung cancer by supporting the Breath of Hope Foundation's 2014 Twin Cities Lung Run

Six years ago, my dad was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer and died two months later. He, like 60% of all lung cancer victims, was NOT a smoker. Upon hearing that he had lung cancer, a lot of people assumed he smoked and would give me an unsympathetic, 'he should've known better' look. On the contrary, he lived a very healthy lifestyle, eating well and exercising regularly. I was hurt by those reactions but couldn't blame people for jumping to that conclusion. There's simply not a lot of information out there regarding lung cancer, so lots of assumptions are made. My motivation to support this cause has only increased, as my Uncle Bill was diagnosed with lung cancer. Thanks to on-going research and new treatment options, Bill completed his aggressive treatment plan, is winning his fight and will be wearing a ‘Survivor’ shirt at this year’s Lung Run! So in memory of my dad and in honor of my uncle, I've made it my mission to educate others that lung cancer can happen to anyone and the fight against it needs our support.

Did you know that in one year, lung cancer claims more lives than breast, prostate, colon, liver and kidney cancer combined? And yet only $1,630 is spent per lung cancer death compared to the $13,452 spent per breast cancer death. Thanks to such financial aid, breast cancer survival rates keep increasing (Thank God!). Wouldn't it be great if all other cancer research had similar support?

My dad fought very hard to beat cancer and was determined to be the slight percentage that survives such an advanced cancer. He volunteered for every clinical trial offered and gladly accepted all his chemo treatments. Despite his grim prognosis, but committed to the fight, he received his last round of chemo just two days before he passed away. I want to continue his determination and find a way to kick lung cancer's butt!!

You are invited to join my team, 'Doran's Dynamos' on August 16th, for the Twin Cities Lung Run to show your support of this worthy cause. Age is irrelevant with cancer, so involve your children (there's even a kid's run)! My 6 kids have already taken on this mission as their own. If they are out running around Lake Harriet in honor of their 'Gumps' and Uncle Bill and wearing their 'Lung Run T-shirts', they are teaching others about this illness. Actions speak louder than words, so let's fill the sidewalks with 'Lung Run' walkers and runners!!!

If you can't attend the run, please consider making a donation.
